Interdependence Day September 12, 2011

” Interdependence Day 2011″ celebration will take place on Monday, Sept 12, 2011 at the Scranton Cultural Center. The speaker for the event will be Patrice Broudeur, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair on Islam, Pluralism, and Globalization at the Faculty of Theology and the Science of Religions at the University of Montreal, Canada.

Linda and Rabbi Joe Mendelsohn

Scranton, PA: The Greater Scranton Interdependence Day Committee announced that
Rabbi Joseph Mendelson and his wife Linda Mendelsohn will receive the 2011 Interdependence Day Award.

Rose Mary Broderick, co-chairman Interdependence Day, stated that the purpose of the award is to provide a format to publicly recognize outstanding leadership and the contributions of individuals closely connected with Interdependence and its practice, to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of interdependence in our community.

Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn, known as “Rabbi Joe”, started his career in the rabbinate in his 40’s. He brings to the table both the textual background of the rabbinate and the practical experience of being an adult in the “real world.” Currently rabbi of Temple Israel in Scranton, “Rabbi Joe” is involved in all aspects of leading and caring for his congregation, and is
• President of the Scranton Area Ministerium – The association of clergy serving
the greater Scranton area.
• Past-President of the Martin Luther King Commission
• On the board of various community organizations designed to promote the health and
welfare of all walks of life,
o Vice-President of the Northeastern Pennsylvania End of Life Coalition

Linda’s career path included owning her own bookkeeping and accounting practice and teaching at the high school, business college and university levels. Since both business and teaching are her passions, she feels blessed that she has been able to combine them to have a very rewarding career path.

Linda has taught in suburban and inner city schools in New Jersey and New York, a farm community in Oklahoma, a Blue Ribbon school in Tennessee, and a rural school in Pennsylvania. While living in Israel she developed and taught Micro Economics and Accounting classes at a university in Tel Aviv to a student body divided between Israelis and newly arrived Russians. She also felt fortunate to be able to teach classes in entrepreneurship to retired army personnel and adults seeking to change their lives.

Currently, Linda is teaching at Forest City Regional High School. Through her involvement with Sondra Myers she has learned about and taught about Interdependency. “The Interdependence Handbook is a collection of essays, speeches, historical documents, and discussion questions on interdependence, the guiding principle for civic life in the 21st Century.” When using this handbook as an introduction, it enabled Linda’s students, as well as members of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), to look through new lenses to understand the world in which they will be participants. Linda finds it very exciting to teach all of her classes through these lenses.
The award will be presented to the Mendelsohn’s at the 2011 Interdependence Day Celebration on September 12, 2011 at the Scranton Culture Center.

Twa Pent Ayisyen ( Three Haitian Painters)
Sept 18-Oct 21
Linder Gallery Keystone College

The exhibit is titled “Twa Pent Ayisyen (Three Haitian Painters)” and will run from September 18 through October 21, 2011. It features 21 paintings by the contemporary Haitian artists Michelet Calice (Najee), Augustin Mona, and Henry Robert Derazin. The paintings range from folk realist imagery to pure abstraction, and mostly focus on the culture and history of the Haitian people. Several paintings also explore the devastation of the 2010 earthquake.

An opening reception for “Twa Pent Ayisyen” will be held on September 18 from 4-6 pm in the Linder Gallery. Along with the paintings, the exhibit will feature videotaped interviews with the three artists, and the artwork will be available for sale to the public.

The exhibit is being coordinated with a Haitian ceramics exhibit (“The Haitian Clayworks Project”), to be held at Moscow Clayworks in Moscow, Pennsylvania, around the same time. The ceramics exhibit is being curated by Frank Goryl, who is an adjunct instructor in the Fine Arts Division at Keystone. In conjunction with both exhibits, we are trying to arrange travel for the Haitian artist Lissa Junueu to come to Pennsylvania in September or October. If these arrangements can be made, Ms. Junueu will speak at Keystone sometime during her visit.

Chinese Chamber Musicians

A Music Journey to the East—Silk and Bamboo (Chinese Chamber Music Performance)

In celebration of Interdependence Day and the Asian Moon Festival, Asian Studies in collaboration with Performance Music at the University of Scranton bring you the Chai Found Music Workshop, one of the foremost Sizhu (Chinese chamber music) ensembles in the world to Northeast Pennsylvania. Chai Found is active on the international stage and has been invited to perform at numerous international music festivals and concerts at Barcelona, Spain; Warsaw, Poland; Vienna, Austria; Berlin, Germany; Vancouver, Canada, etc. Chai Found has also toured the following countries: England, France, Germany, Holland, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, the Philippines, and United States. While preserving the tradition of traditional Chinese chamber music, Chai Found has been innovative in its collaboration with many contemporary music ensembles from Europe, United States, and Asia on producing experimental music that explores new sounds and melodies. In celebration of Interdependence Day, Chai Found symbolizes the spirit of interdependence in its successful bridging the Eastern and Western cultures, the traditional and the contemporary, with the sound of music that transcends cultural boundaries and barriers.

Note: The concert performance on September 11 requires no reservation. A hands-on educational workshop will take place on the following day (9/12), from1 pm to 2:30 pm at the Brennan Hall, Fifth Floor, 509. All are welcome. Free of charge. Interdependence Day Committee

Interdependence Day was launched in Philadelphia on September 12, 2003. The date was deliberately chosen as a post 9/11 symbol of regeneration, as a time to reflect on the tragedy of the incidents of terror, not only in the United States, but all over the world, and to ask ourselves “What next?” It seemed critically important to acknowledge the inevitability and significance of interdependence in our time, and set out to build constructively and culturally a global civic society.
